Email #6: A Candidate, A Concert & “New York Values” (1/15/16)

This week Ted Cruz criticized Donald Trump and his “New York values.” It got me thinking. What does this guy know about about New York values? Here’s a story for him.
It’s November 2001. I’m at The Garden. Couple of months after 9/11. NYC is recovering. NYC is tough. We don’t stay down. That attack left us deeper, tougher, more connected. I still get the chills thinking about watching from the sidewalk when police, firemen and EMS came by after, everyone cheering them, applauding them
This was our city. How dare anyone screw with that?
U2 comes to town.  A band that loves America. A band that loves New York. I was there with my son.
And U2 just absolutely rips it out – kills it – it starts high, it stays high. At the end of the show Bono opens his jacket to show an American flag sewn into the lining.
The names of all the firemen and policemen and EMC people who died that day are shown on the screen behind him. Scrolling down the screen for what seemed like forever. 20,000 people are up on their feet. Screaming “Go New York! Go New York! Go New York!”
The Garden rocked like I’d never felt it. And I was there when Zeppelin shook the place. It was nothing like this.
Nothing before. Nothing since. That’s New York values, Ted Cruz.
