Email #64: I Saw Something in Chicago (5/26/17)

I saw something in Chicago.

A city of compassion.

A like-minded people rallied behind a singular cause.

The more fortunate doing something for the less fortunate.

Books. 2,100 of ’em from bars, restaurants, ice cream parlors, cafes, coffee shops and everywhere else in between. All going to the kids at the Juvenile Temporary Detention Center. (If you haven’t seen the video from the event, you can do so by visiting our home page HERE.)

At The Long Room, a bartender told us she started surveying other bars to make sure they provided the most books. (They did.) At Monk’s downtown, they had to clear shelves in the storage room to keep up with the donations. At George’s Ice Cream Parlor in Andersonville, one extra large box from Home Depot wasn’t nearly enough. They needed five additional boxes and had parents asking to donate money to the cause!

When we finally brought the books to the JTDC, the staff were overwhelmed. They thanked both myself and my brother endlessly as they filled five large laundry tubs. The following morning I received a note:

“A BIG thank you for the book drive that Areena conducted for the JTDC.  Just this morning, both our Superintendent and Deputy Superintendent came to see the donation and they were very impressed.  The books will be a tremendous addition to the books that we have in our main library and housing unit libraries.”

From beginning to end, this book drive was one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. And it would never have happened without Areena.

You can make an impact like this in your community right now. Every one of you, unfortunately, live near a neighborhood in need of support. There are kids who need educations, books, supplies…etc. And if you can’t find the right situation to help, Areena is making it easy for you by expanding our book drive efforts into cities across the country in the coming months.
