Email #62: The Great Barrier Reef is Dying. What’s Next? (4/21/17)

Last May, after a trip to New Zealand, I wrote a piece about the perils facing the world’s coral reef. (You can read it HERE.) I was scared for the future of this ecosystem and angry we let it get this far.

Now the scientists tasked with reversing this dangerous course have given up. They are admitting publicly that the Great Barrier Reef and many like it can’t be saved. They’ll soon be gone forever.

From a piece in The Guardian:“Some reef scientists are now becoming despondent. Water quality expert, Jon Brodie, told the Guardian the reef was now in a “terminal stage”. Brodie has devoted much of his life to improving water quality on the reef, one of a suite of measures used to stop bleaching.

He said measures to improve water quality, which were a central tenet of the Australian government’s rescue effort, were failing.

“We’ve given up. It’s been my life managing water quality, we’ve failed,” Brodie said. “Even though we’ve spent a lot of money, we’ve had no success.”

Of course this piece appeared in a British newspaper. And below you’ll find a brilliant video on the subject produced by the BBC . The world is paying attention to what’s happening with our environment. They are concerned and angry.

America is pulling out of environmental agreements and eliminating regulations that will make the air easier to breathe for the next fifty years. Make the world more livable for our children and grandchildren.

This is not about politics. This is about the future of our planet. Nothing is more important and the world needs us to raise our hands and volunteer to get involved.
