Email #56: A Story From a New Member (2/24/17)

This week our Executive Director, Jeff Hughes, received from a new member a story so compelling that we asked him if we could share it with you. He graciously agreed. Many of our members do what they do in their communities simply because it is the right thing to do. They do it because they know it should be done. Here’s the email in its entirety.

Dear Jeff,

I saw your Areena ad before the new Star Wars movie in December. I was with my 14 year-old son. I texted my wife from my seat, “Remind me to look up Areena when I get home.”

She forgot. I forgot. And about two months went by.

My son and I were recently seeing the LEGO movie and your ad came up again. This time I sent the email to join. I then turned my phone off to watch the movie. When I turned it back on at the end, I had a welcome email from one of your project coordinators and a bunch of projects near me.

One of the organizations that needed volunteers helped take care of disabled adults. I called them on the way home and told them where I lived. Their office? Two blocks from my house. I went in the next day and found out there was a local blind man who needed someone to help him go for a walk each day.

Turns out he lived in an apartment I could see from my front window. I went over and met the guy, Henry, and we went for a walk. It was only ten minutes. I think he wanted somebody to talk to as much as the walk. I can’t explain how it made me feel. Proud.

The next day, I brought my son. Felt like a read dad.

Just writing to thank you. And to say you’ve got two members for life.
