Email #51: Is “The Tech Party” Ready to Emerge? (1/20/17)

In October, I wrote about the choice facing the American electorate in November and what I felt was an absence of leadership. This was a void I believed could and would soon be filled by leaders and visionaries from the tech industry, not by politicians.

The following is a passage from that piece:

“Leadership – the quality that allows one to rise to the occasion and surpass expectations, that gives hope and belief to others that we can come up with creative, thoughtful, useful ways to deal with major issues – is gone from the political spectrum.

Where have you gone, Winston Churchill, JFK, Dwight Eisenhower?

The truth is leadership DOES exist in this country. It exists in our tech industry. Mark Zuckerberg. Jeff Bezos. Larry Page and Sergey Brin. Bill Gates. We’re not being male-specific! Look at this article profiling fifteen young women who are changing the world daily in the digital realm.

The minds are there. The innovation is there. The leadership is there. The country needs it now more than ever. The two-party system that’s been in place for 240 years is not working. We need a third option.”

This past Wednesday, The Today Show featured a segment hinting that this soon may become a reality. Mark Zuckerberg, the 32 year-old founder and head of Facebook, is said to be considering a run for the presidency, possibly as early as 2024, when he’ll be all of 40 years old. This would make him the youngest president ever to serve. Younger than Teddy Roosevelt at 42/ Younger than JFK at 43.

CNN has reported that Zuckerberg’s New Year’s resolution is to visit parts of the United States with which he’s unfamiliar to get a deeper sense of the national mood.

There are big changes coming! Zuckerberg has already created the platform that linked a nation. Now he’s looking to create the policies. That’s terrific. But it’ll take people to make real change.

Our members are ready.
