Email #7: Namath and New York City (1/22/16)

Still thinking about “New York values” after last week’s discussion and it got me thinking about Joe Willie Namath – the most memorable football player ever in New York City.

Flair, charm, talent, tough. Like the city itself.

And when it mattered – like in the Super Bowl – he delivered. Didn’t just deliver. Guaranteed it!

Everyone thought he was nuts.

Beat the Colts? With the Jets? After the first Colt drive we all said it would be a long day.

But it wasn’t.

Namath wouldn’t have it.

He willed the Jets to victory.

He believed. He made the Jets believe. He made us believe.

Namath wasn’t the best to ever play.

But he won the Super Bowl!!

You didn’t.

I didn’t.

He did.

And he told us he was gonna do it.

Why didn’t we believe him?

The man walked around New York City in a mink coat and carried it off. We should have known better.

You never underestimate Namath. You never underestimate New York.
